Why should women in particular take care of their pelvic floor muscles? 🤔
Let's start at the beginning. The pelvic floor muscles (MDM for short) are located between the pubic symphysis, the coccyx and the ischial tuberosities. They surround the bladder, the rectum including the anus and the uterus. They are found in both sexes, but it is in women that they are more likely to be weakened, which can be related to childbirth, pregnancy, hormonal changes, and diseases such as pelvic venous insufficiency or endometriosis.
The tasks of the pelvic floor muscles are:
👉 support and protection of organs located within the pelvis,
👉 Help to maintain correct posture,
👉 Supporting correct bowel movements, including urination.
The latter is particularly important. Ladies struggling with incontinence often have weakened or overly tense muscles in the pelvic area, causing bladder dysfunction. What symptoms should draw our attention? First and foremost, the sensation of a full bladder all the time, even after emptying. Loss of urine when sneezing or coughing. Sudden urges to the bladder.
If you observe the above symptoms in yourself, it is worth consulting a urogynaecological physiotherapist and assessing the condition of the MDM and then introducing appropriate exercises.
Did you know that abnormal work of the pelvic floor muscles can be associated with bruxism or temporomandibular joint disorder? 🤔 So let me remind you that on my profile you will already find a post about the connection between MDM and the temporomandibular joint 🤗🤗.
